the last HURRAH trek for our Nurses
January 2022: life is good, and Breast Cancer is not even in my head space.
April 2022: is it a lump? a cyst? that time of the month? I’ll wait it out... no biggie!
May 2022: ummm HELLO GP, we may have a problem…
...and well, we know the rest.
June 2022 to FEB 2023 took me through 20 weeks of chemo, surgery, 6 weeks of radiation.
Throughout the hell and low/highlights, my McGrath breast care nurse, and hospital appointed BC nurse literally NURSED me. A friend, a counsellor, a mother, a medic, a stylist, a makeup artist, an online shopper, a foodie. Is there anything these nurses are not?!
As I look back on the last few years and treks, the memories feel surreal.
Trek 1: January 2023, 5 days before radiation began, I joined the team for the last 14km (of their 150km trek). I was adamant I'd manage the walk yet silently struggled as my body was still very much in trauma mode and just getting through each day was a big ask. My biggest (first world) concern: would my drawn-on eyebrows sweat off?!
Trek 2: January 2024, 60km in a day (modified to 45km due to road closures due to weather). We managed, just. The feet, not so happy!
Trek 3: January 2025, the last HURRAH! 60km from Gosford to the SCG for our life saving angels, the McGrath Nurses.
So, it’s been a big year, a costly year for most. But if you or anyone you know ever find yourself facing breast cancer, TRUST ME- you want a McGrath Breast Care Nurse in your corner!
I’m fundraising to ensure that no one goes through breast cancer without the care of these nurses, and ideally, we want to ensure that these nurses are accessible nationwide.
McGrath Breast Care Nurses help individuals, and their families affected by breast cancer by providing invaluable physical, psychological, and emotional support from the time of diagnosis and throughout treatment.
Thank you so much for your support!
